Demerara Oxygen Company Limited (DOCOL) has recruited an expert to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent accident in which three employees were injured at the company’s operations site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and another expert to repair the damaged equipment.
Heera Persaud and Rabindranauth Ramdhani , both of Leonora, and Mirvel Richards of Bagostville, all of whom are patients at St Joseph Mercy Hospital, suffered varying degrees of burns as a result of an explosion at their workplace last Friday.
According to DOCOL Chief Executive Officer, Shameer Hoosein, one of the experts is from Barbados and will be conducting a probe, while the other is a Brazilian and is here to fix the equipment.
Hoosein said that DOCOL’s production line will not be interrupted, since another system is being used.
The official disclosed that management has been visiting the injured on a daily basis, and the company is absorbing all the medical costs, while assisting the respective families.
According to a Ministry of Labour official, an investigation has begun since the day of the incident at DOCOL, however, that probe is not complete since the three injured employees are yet to be interviewed. This was also noted by the Fire Department.
It is believed that a spark ignited gas where the employees were engaged in refilling cylinders.
