– as Barbados/Leewards share title
By Sean Devers in Jamaica
Watched by a small crowd, Barbados and the Leeward Islands played to a sensational Tie in a low-scoring Regional One-Day final at Sabina Park in Jamaica yesterday.
Barbados dedicated their share of their 6th title and first since 2002 to the memory of their late Prime Minister David Thomson who died on Saturday at age 48 after a long illness.
Showing plenty of improvement in control since his return from Yorkshire, Tino Best grabbed 4-28 and got support from Skipper Ryan Hinds (3-30) as the Leewards, led by an attacking 43 from their 37-year-old Skipper Wilden Cornwall made 139-9 (innings closed) off 32.5 overs.
Barbados, runner-up in both the 2010 First-Class and T20 tournaments again failed to cross the final hurdle in their record 17th Regional One-Day final when they slumped to 139 all out in 38 overs as Man-of-the-Match 26-year-old Lionel Baker grabbed 5-33 to give the Leewards their 6th title and first since 1997.
Kirk Edwards, dropped twice, scored 44 while Carlo Morris made 26 for the Bajans who wore black arm bands after both teams had observed a minute’s silence before the start of the game.
Barbados appeared to panic in the closing stages as the Leewards, without their off-spinner Justin Athanaze who retired ill to end the Leewards innings, defended their paltry total excellently as Gavin Tonge supported Baker with 2-33.
The Leewards opted to bat first in glorious sunshine and were in early trouble at 17-3 when Monchin Hodge (0) was bowled by the 29-year-old Best, Chesney Hughes (0) was removed by Kemar Roach and Steve Liburd (5) edged the lively Best to Dale Richards at first slip.
Cornwall showed his intentions to be aggressive from the start of his innings and along with Javia Liburd took the Leewards, in their first final since their loss to the Windwards in the 2000 final in Jamaica, to 50 from 54 balls as they went after the Bajan new ball pair.
Cornwall, who smashed a pugnacious 59-ball 85 against Barbados in the opening round when the Barbadians won by 4 wickets, continued to play shots and dominated the partnership.
Hinds introduced his spin early in the fray and the Antiguan Cornwall smashed him like a bullet to the cover boundary before Javia Liburd (12) needlessly charged down the track and was stumped two balls later as the Islanders slipped to 77-4 in the 15th over.
Hinds struck again in the 19th over at 87-5 when Jacque Taylor (8) was caught behind and Barbados were in firm control.
Jahmar Hamilton got going with a boundary off Hinds but when Cornwall was caught and bowled by Best who also removed Hamilton (10), it was turning into what seemed like a one-side contest at 107-7.
Gavin Tonge (7) and Lionel Baker (4) were quickly sent packing before Athanaze (18*) was forced to retire ill to prematurely close the innings of the Leewards.
Chasing their small target, Barbados lost Jason Haynes for a duck at 8-1 in the 2nd over as hyperactive leg-spinner Anthony Martin opened the bowling and struck with his 2nd ball.
Richards (20) was bowled by Baker at 28-2 and by Lunch Barbados had progressed to 40-2 off 11 overs with Hinds on 15 and Kirk Edwards on 4.
Hinds (16), was caught behind just after the interval as Baker struck at 46-3 while Baker removed Jonathon Carter (1) two runs later as the substandard batting in this tournament continued.
Dwayne Smith (4) was run out at 54-5 and when Baker bowled Morris at 106-7 the innings went into decline as Jevon Searles (8) was caught behind off Tonge and Suleiman Benn (7) was removed by Baker to leave the score on 131-8.
With the scores tied, Edwards was bowled by Tonge and Best, in a moment of insanity, was run out first ball to register only the 2nd Tie in the history of Regional One-Day cricket after Guyana and the Windwards had both scored 186 at Albion in 1993.
Although the match was tied, the Leewards appeared the real winners and that was reflected in the contracting moods of the teams at the presentation ceremony for a competition which did little to ease the worries of the ordinary batsmanship in the region, especially against spin bowling.
Cornwall received the ‘Best batsman’ award while Hinds got the ‘Best bowler’ award with Dale Richards taking home the ‘Best fielder’ award at the presentation ceremony.
