The cycling fraternity has been plunged into a state of mourning following the death of former President Ulric Pollydore who died on Wednesday last after a period of illness.
The hard working and plain spoken Polloydore fondly referred to as ‘Polly’ served as President of the Guyana Cycling Federation from 1999 to 2002, taking over the reins of the federation after the demise of Regan Rodrigues.
Even after his tenure as President, Pollydore, who was also President of the Kaieteur Cycle Club, maintained a very close relationship with cycling and made it his duty to travel when ever races were held outside the city.
His close friend, National Coach Hassan Mohamed told Kaieteur Sport that Pollydore has been ailing for sometime
but even though he was not 100% fit, he still found the time to stay in touch with the sport.
“Pollydore was a very close friend and buddy of mine since 1983. I met him in his professional capacity as a contractor and ever since then we have maintained a very good relationship. His sons Godfrey and Jason started their respective careers under me at the NSC Teach Them Young programme, Godfrey, back in the late 1980’s, and we all know the achievements of Godfrey.”
Mohamed recalls that the two made many trips together local and overseas and Pollydore was always someone who would gave advice and assist otherwise.
“He was a very lively individual who always had you laughing whenever he was around. He was very close to his son Godfrey and travelled with him on many overseas trips to support him.” Mohamed said he will be sorely missed in the cycling fraternity.
“I recall that even in his sick state, Ulric made the trip for the first and second stages of the annual 3-stage in May this year. He was there with us in Berbice in a wheel chair for two stages but said he was too tired to make the third stage which began in Linden. He supported us all the way regardless of his son being there or not and that is what I admired about him. He always inspired you to get the job done.”
Kaieteur Sports takes this opportunity to extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Ulric Pollydore, may his soul rest in peace.
