The National Senior Chess Championship Qualifier will get underway tomorrow at the Keishar’s Sports Club on Hadfield Street, Georgetown. Several of the nation’s top players are expected to battle for the title included Taffin Khan, Omar Shariff, Ronuel Greenidge, Loris Nathoo, Learie Webster, Errol Tiwari, Shiv Nandalall, David Khan, Kriskal Persaud, Dennis Dillon, Michael Pereira, Alex Joseph, Glenford Corlette and Carlos Allicock.
At the completion of this tournament the top seven players will move on to face the National Chess Champion Wendell Meusa, which is schedule to start in November. The organizers have also indicated that number of juniors have indicated their interest in participating at these championships. The organizers have lauded this move and feels that it augers well for the development of the sport. Among those nurturing such ambitions are Sham Khan, Ron and Raan Motilall, Suhai Feng, Rashad Hussain, Carlos Petterson, Cecil Cox and Saeed Ali.
Meanwhile, the tournament will take the Swiss format over nine rounds; with a time control of one hour, thirty minutes play. There will also be thirty second increments from the first one. Registration will start at 09:00hrs and the first pawn will be pushed at 10:00hrs. Interested players are asked to walk with their chess boards. Registration fee for non-members will be $800, while members will pay $300.
The Chess Federation recently benefited from a sponsorship deal from beverage giants, DDL. During the presentation ceremony, Brand Executive Ms. Alexis Crawford, stated that DDL is committed to the development of Chess in Guyana. She noted the strides made by the Chess Federation saying that her organization is pleased with the work the Federation has done. She also encouraged the general public to come out and support the players. This is the final of the four tournaments Topco Juices have sponsored for 2010.
