The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in furthering its programme of activities aimed at fostering the talents and energies of youths once again has lauded another initiative towards realising its goal.
This initiative is symbolised in the youth and scout focus adopted by the force.
The Guyana Police Force through the Divisional Commander of Division ‘A’ Assistant Commissioner of Police George Vyphuis recently presented a tennis table with accessories, table tennis board, table tennis balls, a football and a basketball to the Saint Ann’s Primary School, Agricola.
This initiative resulted from a request made in his capacity as President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association and as Commissioner of Police to Henry Greene by Mr. Owen John, a former President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association and member of the Executive Council, Athletics Coach and Community Organiser in Agricola.
In recent times, the Force has embarked on an initiative aimed at achieving that goal of mending the divide between the Agricola community and the police.
It is envisage that very shortly there will be a Police Youth Club and Scout Group within the community. The gesture is all part of the strategy in bridging that gap.
Assistant Commissioner Vyphuis in making the presentation told the gathering which also included six teachers and one hundred odd pupils, Owen John, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Superintendent John Sauers, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Table Tennis Association Patrick Triumph, Table Tennis Coordinator of the Guyana Police Force Corporal 16928 Andrew Daly and several police ranks that the items being presented is just a small part of what they have in store for the community.
He urged the recipients to care and make full use of the gift and sounded his adoption of the pupils there. He assured that the force stands ready to render any assistance where necessary and urged that the youths enroll as scouts which will soon be realised.
Accepting the items on behalf of the school was the Acting Headmistress Ms. Vasilla Loncke, who thanked Commissioner of Police Mr. Henry Greene, DSM and the Guyana Police Force for the gesture.
She assured that it will be put to good use and further stated that the presentation is a realisation of a desire for the school and the community since several other approaches were made to other organisations, but to date, no response was received.
Also making brief remarks were John and Triumph. They were all very appreciative of the gesture.
Other items donated by the Commander on his own behalf were a basket ball and a football.
The Guyana Police Force in support of its goal has established a Youth and Scouts Office at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary to coordinate activities relating to its Youth and Scout Groups in Police Divisions throughout the country.
In the past, Saint Ann’s produced several top table tennis players and is today benefitting from the services of Mr. Fabio John, who is a teacher there and is a table tennis coach. He is the son of Owen John.
As the police exited the community several residents expressed positive sentiments at their efforts.
