– remains in C/wealth medal hunt
Central American and Caribbean (CAC) flyweight bronze medalist Dexter Jordon scored a sensational first round knockout over Neo Thamahane of Lesotho to remain Guyana’s only boxer with a realistic chance of earning a medal when action continued in that tournament at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, India yesterday.
The Forgotten Youth Foundation boxer now advances to the quarterfinals where he opposes Kenyan Benson Njangiru tomorrow evening. A win in this bout assures the Guyanese pugilist of at least a bronze medal even as he will progress to the silver medal round. Reports coming out of India held Jordon’s performance in high esteem even from his opponent Thamahane. “I felt dizzy, he kept punching and punching and punching and I was unable to do anything,” the Lesotho boxer admitted.
Commenting on the one-sided fight Jordon said, “I felt very confident and I had only one goal in my mind and that was to beat the opponent.”
He further voiced his aspirations for the rest of the tournament. “I am looking forward to the quarterfinal in a couple of days. I am ready for it.”
According to reports, Jordan unleashed a barrage on Thamahane from the onset dropping his man and the referee issued the count. He beat the count, but Jordan did not let up forcing the official to call a halt to the proceedings and hand the Guyanese an easy passage to the next round.
The other local boxers competing in the tournament, Clevon Rock and Devon Boatswain have already suffered losses and the burden of attaining honours for this country in the fistic sport rests heavily on Jordon.
All Guyana would be backing the teenager to secure a medal at these games.
