The recent sporting achievements of Capoey, a small village in Region 2 Essequibo, was brought to the fore when a group of officials associated with the celebratory activities associated with the Amerindian Heritage Month, traveled to that village to participate in relevant activities. ‘Capoey’ means “Rising of the Moon”.
Last Sunday morning, the female cricketers of that community won the female category of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport organized softball cricket tournament at old Guyana National Service Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, last Sunday.
They engaged the Lima Sands SC in the finals and won by 8 wickets after the latter team had amassed a meager total of 49 in 8 overs. Replying, Capoey females lashed off the required total (51) while conceding just 2 wickets.
The day’s activities received favourable support with person coming from the outlying communities to witness a well organized programme. Delivering brief remarks, Toshao Valerie De Young officially welcomed the participants and supporters alike while urging them to partake and participate in the warm hospitality of the residents of the community. Officials of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs lauded the efforts of the villagers. The Government officials also sponsored some of the prizes for the winners in the various categories.
Beverage conglomerates, Ansa McAl also sponsored some of the events.
Meanwhile, in other results for the day, Lima Sands United defeated the Capoey males in the final by 6 wickets avenging an earlier defeat.
Several individuals won medals including the best batters and bowlers. Players taking immaculate catches in the finals also received special prizes.
In his remarks the organizing Secretary congratulated all the participants and urged them to continue working hard to ensure that the youths engage in wholesome activities with an aim of improvement in their respective communities.
