The news that former National Cricket Selector Lennox Hunte succumbed to a brief illness on Wednesday night has left the local cricket fraternity in mourning. He was 64.
Hunte spent most of his life involved with cricket as a player for the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Administer for DCC, the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) and Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
Hunte who began his career as a left-arm pacer, switched to left-arm spin during the latter part of his club career. The former DCC first division Skipper played at the club level until the 1990s before becoming involved in cricket administration.
Hunte was one of the longest serving Demerara and Guyana under-19 cricket selectors and was also a member of the senior national selection panel for several years.
Former national youth player and DCC President Alfred Mentore told Kaieteur Sport last evening that Hunte was his first division Captain at DCC and plans were on stream at the Queenstown based club to install Hunte as an Honorary member.
Hunte was a former DCC Vice president and Mentore said that Hunte, who was a national junior selector up to last year, was a strict disciplinarian and expressed his sympathy on behalf of DCC.
Hunte worked for several years in Corentyne, Berbice and was married to the late Guyana Chronicle Sports reporter Nichole Cave-Hunte and lived with his daughter in East Ruimveldt at the time of his death.
