A confident Guyana boxing team to the Commonwealth Games in India, left today for their final destination via a connecting flight in New York and is expected to arrive there sometime tomorrow.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle spoke to Kaieteur Sport yesterday and disclosed that after three weeks encamped the three boxers and the management team were confident of putting on a good showing for their country. The team consists of boxers Clevon Rock, Dexter Jordan and Devon Boatswain, Coach Terrence Poole and Manager Ninvalle.
Ninvalle, who is also a government Member of Parliament, said there was a high level of camaraderie among the team and they have been making preparations for the event, which have gone well. Poole, National Coach Wincel Thomas, Mike Parris and Sebert Blake among others have been lending support to their preparations. They have had sessions both in the morning and afternoons.
The fighters bound into action when the boxing segment of the games starts on October 5. Rock, a previous junior Commonwealth silver medalist, would be one of the more experienced of the trio. Jordan is a solid skillful fighter and can hold his own in any circumstance, while Boatswain is also a solid fighter. All the boxers have had the chance to test their preparation in recent competition and to fine tune for the games.
Ninvalle said he expects his charges to perform at their best and based on their resolve he foresees that they will do their country proud.
