– Brazil, Rage take second, third
Providence domino team turned in a clinical performance at the National Gymnasium to take the Supligen National Domino title, emphatically with 77 points that left Brazil and Rage second and third respectively with a close 71 and 69 points in the final.
The two-day playoff that Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony opened ensured that a tense competitive atmosphere dominated the venue. In the end, it was Providence that took home the $200,000 first prize and trophy.
Brazil received $125,000 for their efforts while Rage got $100,000. Trophies accompanied every cash prize as the man that led Providence to glory with 17 wins, Ronald Beharry, got $10,000 for being adjudged Most Valuable Player of the final playoffs.
Nestle Brand Manager, Selwyn Bobb, in addressing the crowd at the presentation ceremony, said that he was impressed with all the teams that participated in the tournament. Over 220 teams had taken part in the tournament with 24 reaching last weekend’s final.
Bobb informed that Nestle, through its Supligen brand, is connected with consumers and most of their contributions to the sport have been an effort to build it from the grassroots level. He was of the view that with greater discipline, the competition could grow.
“Nestle is very much in touch with consumers, so this tournament is part of our shared value and I hope that the winning team will use a lot of Supligen. We want to build this sport from the base right up to the top,” Bobb told the massive turnout Sunday night.
As part of the winning packages, the top three teams received a case of Supligen each with MVP, Beharry receiving six Supligen. “Beepats (the local distributor for Nestle products) is very proud of all the teams and Guyana domino association,” Bobb added.
Senior Organising Secretary of the domino association, Wendell McPherson stated that the event was well organised at the National Gymnasium, while he apologised for the absence of the West Berbice team that was expected to contest the final.
According to McPherson, Providence played a quality brand of domino. He said that team was in a league of its own, which was represented in the final scores. The competition promises to be an even bigger event next year with the inclusion of more teams.
