Dear Editor,
If there was one road in this country that the Government has been spending money to rehabilitate over and over, it would be Rampersaud Avenue in Sheet Anchor, Canje.
The road which hardly resembles an avenue at the moment is once again in a state which is unbecoming of a thoroughfare utilized by hundreds each day. It is one of the major streets in the Canje area, since there is a nursery school, a primary school, market, a massive housing scheme, churches, and hundreds of residents who reside there along other smaller streets. The sorry state of Somal Rampersaud Avenue has been exposed several times on various newscasts.
The poor state of that road has existed for nearly two decades now, even under the PNC pre 1992 government. Myself and others would take off our shoes and walk to school or wear long-boots. Today, more than 15 years later, Rampersaud Avenue is much worse.
On numerous occasions, temporary works were done to the road. But why not give the people of that area an all- weather road for once? We see good roads and streets being built for people on the Corentyne and elsewhere; why not for the people of Sheet Anchor and others who access this road?
Sheet Anchor is one of the more depressed villages in these parts of Berbice. The place where I was born and spent much of my childhood days has been neglected very much. The access road to what is now BK International, Ministry of Works, Toolsie Persaud Canje Depot and where there was a helipad for President Burnham is a horror movie scene.
I am pleading with the Regional Administration to give a permanent fix to Somal Rampersaud Avenue; the school children, teachers, residents and other stakeholders in the area deserve better than this, come on! Leon Jameson Suseran
