Mae’s School honours Michael Parris

Mae’s School made a significant gesture when they honoured Guyana’s lone Olympic medalist to date, former boxer Michael Parris, for his outstanding effort which has not been equalled or surpassed some 30 years later.
Administrator of the institution, Trevor Rodrigues, made the presentation at a simple ceremony at the school on Friday in the presence of students and several members of staff. He handed over an undisclosed monetary gift to Parris and in brief remarks noted the school’s interest in producing rounded students hence their thrust in the direction of sports.
Rodrigues noted that they have invested in upgrading a playfield opposite the school and a number of their students are national athletes involved in a variety of sporting disciplines.
He expressed the desire to one day see the school produce an Olympic champion. He recognised Parris’ effort, dedication and discipline that made him achieve the Bronze medal at the 1980 Olympics.
Parris for his part thanked the school for the gift and honour bestowed him. He said he was happy to have been recognised. He told the students that it was not an easy road he had traveled for this glory, but that it took hard work, discipline and dedication on his part to succeed.
Guyana Amateur Boxing Association President Steve Ninvalle, who was instrumental in arranging for Mae’s to honour the champ, thanked the school, while summing up their readiness to recognise Parris when contacted.
Ninvalle expressed the hope that many other business entities will honour Parris. He stated that the Private Sector is extremely important because government could not do it alone.
Parries displayed his medal to the enthusiastic students and took a photo opportunity with some of the national athletes attending there.
