President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) Peter Abdool is pleased with the impact that the ProAm boxing cards have made since it’s inauguration on February 28 last. Towards this end, boxing officials have completed the necessary logistics for a television programme to discuss the pros and cons, while bringing the public up to date on the intricacies of the sport.
The first edition of the programme dubbed ‘Guyana Boxing Revue’ would be aired on HBTV 9 this Sunday, September 5 between 19:30hrs-20:00hrs and subsequently every Sunday evening onwards. The programme would be hosted by former Continental of Americas welterweight boxing champion, Michael Benjamin and will touch on issues relevant to the development of the sport. During the programme viewers would receive expert views on the intricacies of the sport as well as see highlights of some of the more action packed encounters of previous ProAm cards.
This week’s programme would entertain the presence of former Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Howard Cox who will join Benjamin during the half hour programme. Mr. Cox is also one of the television analysts on the monthly ProAm boxing cards and would have an in depth knowledge of the intricacies of the various fights since the inauguration of the card.
The monthly boxing event is Mr. Abdool’s brainchild and he staunchly believes that the ProAm boxing cards is the answer to the flagging fortunes of the sport. He is adamant that local boxers are not receiving adequate activity and publicity for their efforts. It was for this reason that the ProAm cards were conceptualized.
The ProAm boxing extravaganza is staged on the last Friday of the month and is a joint effort of the GBBC, the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. The cards were conceptualized to facilitate the local boxers that were complaining of the paucity of cards thus compromising their careers. Boxers appearing on the card have agreed to fight for a reduced purse in order to remain active even as they build competitive records. To date there have been quite a few action packed encounters and the crowd attendance which has been small at the start is steadily growing as the public is only now beginning to appreciate the volume of local talent available.
All of the local boxers are admitted free of cost while the admission price for patrons is an affordable five hundred dollars. Those unable to attend the live show may view the pound for pound action in the comfort of their living rooms on NCN 11, the many sports bars around the country or any other place where they could access a television set.
Up to press time the administrators of the GBBC were locked in discussion over the compilation of this month end’s card scheduled for Friday 24.
