Mayor’s Cup All Star U-23 footballers leave for Suriname tour today

The Mayor’s Cup Under-23 All Star football squad departed the country today for their Goodwill tour to neighbouring Suriname running from today Tuesday August 3 to Saturday August 7.
The squad will face a Suriname Under-20 team tomorrow and an Under-23 team on Friday in the two-match series.
Coordinator of the Mayor’s Cup Organising Committee, Lennox Arthur, informed that the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond (football federation) had confirmed that all arrangements are in place for the visit and they will host the team for the two-match tour.
The squad features a number of young players, but is balanced by several older heads who will lend stability to the outfit. They played a few practice games against local club sides prior to departure.
Among the senior players heading the squad are: Sherman David, Gavin Wilson, Solomon Austin, Shemroy Arthur and Stellon David. The other players will feature severoutstanding junior talents led by Trevor Lewis, Williams Europe, Trevon Lythcott and also include Michael Henry, Oswald Cornette, Dorville Stewart, Amos Ramsey, Dellon John, Sheldon Holder, Joshua Kamal, Anthony Benfield, Lawrenso Duesbury, Mustapha Haqq, Leonardo Adams, Kirk Warren, Nedd Fraser, Brian Robinson and Royston Burgess.
The team’s management is Andra Dazzel (Manager), Peter Lashley (Coach) and Terrence Lewis (Physical Trainer).

Taffin Khan, Cecil Cox triumph in Apex Insurance Rapid Chess tournament

Taffin Khan played undefeated to capture the Apex Insurance Rapid Chess Tournament when that tournament concluded at the Keishar’s Sports Club last weekend. Learie Webster won six of his games to finish second while Errol Tiwari amassed 5 points to seal off the final podium position.
Dennis Dillon, Irshad Mohamed, David Khan, Omar Shariff and Frankie Farley all finished on four points apiece while Glenford Corlette and Ryan Singh finished on three and a half points. Ronald Roberts scored 3, Haatram Parbat 2 1/2, Alex Joseph and Christopher Chung tied on 2 points apiece while Steven Leung ended in the cellar on 1 1/2 points.
National Junior Champion Cecil Cox returned with a bang to seal off the top spot in that category after registering five wins and two draws. Raan Motilall finished second, while Rajendra Jettoo from West Demerara surprised the field to take the third position ahead of Saeed Ali.
The final points standing is , Cecil Cox (6), Raan Motilall (5 1/2), Rajendra Jettoo (5), Saeed Ali, Ron Motilall, Suhai Feng, Sham Khan (4 1/2), Rashad Hussain, Meikel Mohabir, Jason Barnwell (4 points each), Faraad Baksh (3 1/2). Eight other players were bundled at the bottom on three points apiece.
The tournament was organized by the Guyana Chess Federation and sponsored by Apex Insurance Brokers Inc.
