Autopsy raises questions… ASP Murray shot twice in head
Assistant Superintendent Ivelaw Murray
An autopsy on the body of Assistant Superintendent Ivelaw Murray has revealed that he was shot twice in the head, a revelation that has raised questions as to whether the officer indeed committed suicide.
Kaieteur News confirmed last night that Murray was shot below the chin, that bullet shattered his tongue and the roof of his mouth before exiting between the victim’s eyebrows. The bullet then pierced the roof of the victim’s house. The other gunshot wound was to the right temple and the bullet exited through the left temple.
According to one investigator, the wound below the chin was much larger than the gunshot to the temple, and this also raised further questions about how the senior rank met his end.
None of the warheads has been recovered.
Kaieteur News spoke to medical persons with experience in treating gunshot wounds. They all opined that the gunshot under the chin would have either killed Murray or so incapacitated the officer that he would have been unable to shoot himself a second time.
The experts also said that they had never treated a case in which a suicide victim’s body bore more than one lethal gunshot wound.
Contacted last night, Police Commissioner Henry Greene told Kaieteur News that while he hadn’t spoken to Pathologist Dr. V Bridgemohan, the ranks who are investigating the matter have revealed this information to him.
According to Commissioner Greene, the investigators believe that the same man shot himself twice.
“This is bordering on forensic science, and we’ve got to get the report from the doctor.”
Commander Steve Merai also confirmed that Assistant Superintendent Murray’s head had two gunshot wounds.
Initial investigations had indicated that Murray committed suicide at his home after shooting Constable Kelvin Shepherd with his .38 service revolver in the barrack room of the Whim Police Station.
Police had received reports that the two were heard arguing shortly before Shepherd was slain.
While no clear motive has surfaced, Commissioner of Police Henry Greene had told reporters on Wednesday that the two ranks had shared an “inappropriate” relationship.
Commissioner Greene said that he was told that Shepherd used to drive Murray’s car, and that Shepherd used to provide food for the junior rank.
According to Greene, he was also told that the two ranks would sometimes stay at each other’s homes.
He explained that the Corporal who had visited the barrack room shortly before the incident was told by the Officer that the two had a close relationship. This was verified by the Constable, he said.
The Corporal then left the barrack room before Shepherd received the gunshot wound to his head.
