Fisherman’s body found near koker
The body of 36-year-old fisherman Seeram Balwant, popularly known as “Bird”, of 347 Grove Housing Scheme, who reportedly went down while bailing a boat at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, has surfaced.
According to reports, Balwant’s badly decomposed body was found floating next to the koker at Friendship yesterday morning.
Seeram disappeared last Sunday morning after attempts by his fellow fisherman to rescue him failed.
The deceased man’s mother, Irene Balwant, said that she intends to bury her son as early as possible.
According to another fisherman, Ramsarran Narine, of Grove Housing Scheme, he, along with Seeram and another friend, was at the Friendship Koker bailing out a fishing boat that was submerged.
He said while Seeram was bailing out the water from the boat, “the bucket pitch out he hand and he (Seeram) jump after the bucket.”
Narine said that Seeram tried to swim to collect the bucket. However, “he went down into the water and I try to save him… he hold onto me, but I had to loose him because the current was very strong.”
Narine recounted that after he surfaced he did not see Seeram.
“I tried to swim and look for him but I didn’t get to see him anymore.”
Seeram’s mother lamented that her son was not a capable swimmer and he should not have gone too deep into the water to retrieve anything.
