The Berbice Cricket Board on Wednesday with sponsorship from Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Ltd. launched an historic Under-13 Inter-club competition, the first of its kind to be organised by a board in Guyana.
To be administered by the Board’s Cricket Development Programme, the main aim is to unearth talented players for the future.
Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster said that the competition would serve as a nursery for the County’s Under-15 Inter-county team and would enable the Board to have a pool of talented players from the Under-13 to 19 levels.
With this new tournament, the Berbice Board has a packed junior programme with Under-13, 15, 17, 19 and 23 tournaments. Competition is expected to bowl off as soon as school closes in July and players born on or after the September 1st, 1996 would be eligible to play.
It is anticipated that around 20 teams are expected to be a part of the tournament and an elite training squad comprising 24 players would be selected for special coaching sessions.
Foster hailed the sponsorship of Ricks & Sari, who would be contributing over $100,000 in cash and 30 hampers which would be used as prizes.
Coming in for special mention were Mrs. Dianne Rodriques and Sales Executive Mr. Carlos Rodriques. It was also announced that outstanding performances in the tournament would result in players being selected for the Inter-Zones teams to contest the Poonai’s Pharmacy Under-13 tournament in August. Board Treasurer Anil Beharry hailed the tournament as a significant milestone, stating that the organisation was leaving no stones unturned in its quest to develop the game. President Keith Foster disclosed that every available talent in Berbice would be unearthed and developed to the fullest capacity.
He also noted that the Board in 2010 has been placing great emphasis on Elite Coaching Programmes for both junior and senior players in the bid to produce rounded players. The Under-13 tournament, the President stated would be the starting block for Berbice junior cricket teams and would assist the Board to fulfill its aim to totally dominate all junior cricket in Guyana.
Sales Executive of Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Ltd Carlos Rodriques expressed his Company’s pleasure in sponsoring the historic tournament. Rodrigues conveyed gratitude on behalf of his company to Berbice Cricket Board for affording them the opportunity to be part of developing new and talented players.
Rodriques said that his Company was committed to sports development as it not only encourages youths to develop their personal talent but also to keep them away from the social ills plaguing society.
The young Sales Executive also stated that his Company strongly believes in giving back to society. He challenged all Under-13 players in Berbice to take advantage of playing in the tournament and expressed the hope that the relationship between Ricks & Sari and the Berbice Cricket Board would develop in the future.
All clubs in Berbice are reminded that they have until Friday June 25, 2010 to register to play. Those interested can contact Angela Haniff on 333 2375, Carl Moore on 614 8364, David Black on 624 7606 or Hilbert Foster on 337 4562 for further information.
