Nero edges D’Andrade in Granny Luces Classic

– stops Guyanese from winning three straight titles
The rivalry between Trinidad and Tobago’s, Gavin Nero and Guyana’s, Lionel D’Andrade took an intense twist on Sunday in the Granny Luces 5km Classic with Nero preventing the Guyanese from winning three consecutive titles in the marquee event.
Nero won the battle in 15:20.00 with D’Andrade second in 15:23.00 as the duo had clearly separated their pace from the pack. Trinidad’s Elvis Turner finished in a distant third with 16:20.00 while a stiff contest was being ensured over a minute ahead.
Speaking briefly to Kaieteur Sport from Trinidad yesterday, D’Andrade said that he misread the pace at the bottom, and when Nero jumped him, he simply had nothing left. He expressed regret over being unable to win the event an unprecedented three times.
“I really tried to defend my title and in the end, I think I tried too much. I underestimated the race at the bottom, I think,” the top distance athlete said, adding that he continues to be among the top distance athletes in the country following the performance.
D’Andrade informed that he will be turning his attention to Barbados on Saturday where he will be competing in the ‘In De Heart of Barbados’ 10km Road Race, which is usually a mega event, before returning to Trinidad for a 5km race on Sunday.
