Less than one month after successfully staging a tournament for intermediate players and those that fall outside of the top ten rating of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), President of the Worldly Words Scrabble Club has embarked on a move to take the sport into the rural communities.
Towards this end, scrabble players are scheduled to travel to Hopetown Berbice today Sunday, June 13 to engage in competition as well as to encourage wider participation in the sport. President of the Worldly Words Scrabble Club, Nicholas Grant explained that the one day retreat would encompass a tournament as well as serve as a recruitment exercise for aspiring word formers in that region. He said that already several of the qualifying players have shown an interest to participate in the activities. Some of those players are Elton Clarke, Ruby Cummings, Grace Hercules and Kampta Ramnarine among others.
Mr. Grant also said that apart from the usual $500 registration fees, participants would be asked to contribute towards the transportation costs. The bus leaves Georgetown at around 09:00hrs this morning. All interested players are asked to contact Mr. Grant on telephone 226-4319 or 610-4319.
