I share your editorial concern about the noise nuisance debacle (Kaieteur News, May 2010) which “disrupts sleep when that sleep is needed”.
A recent medical report suggests deprivation of sleep can lead to health problems such as diabetes.
Your newspaper recently published a letter of mine, “A household suffers through police inaction” (April 21, 2010) in which I complained about the loud music…being blasted from a business place in West Ruimveldt, from 21:00 hrs until 3:30 hrs”. The police visited the building around midnight, but the music still continued. I noted the playing of the loud music will soon happen again. This time it started at 9:00 hrs the night before Mother’s Day and ended at 4:00hrs. The police did not stop it.
Your editorial stated the “police have expressed zero tolerance for such behaviour”, but apparently, they have not implemented that zero tolerance policy. My feeling, now, is that people are paying the police to ignore the issue and that some police are accepting the payment. And because of this, the blasting of the loud music will be a regular feature, especially the night before holidays and other special days.
The officer in charge of the West Ruimveldt police station, of course, will be promoted for “putting in his time”; the police officers patrolling the West Ruimveldt area will, no doubt be amply rewarded by the owner of the business, while my family, including children and babies suffer.
Will the authorities please do something about this noise nuisance which has become a national problem?
