Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett yesterday in an invited comment said that at present there are no reports of Guyanese being directly affected in the current wave of violence in Jamaica.
The Foreign Affairs Minister said that while Jamaica is currently in a sad state of affairs, the Guyana consulate in that country has not reported any directly affected Guyanese.
Guyana has a large number of citizens in the island state and at the University of the West Indies which has campuses in the country where its capital in turmoil.
Tivoli Gardens in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, is currently experiencing a wave of violence following moves by the Jamaican Government to extradite to the United States of America Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke also called “President.”
For several days now the Jamaican Government has tried and failed to capture the alleged drug lord, Coke.
The country’s Prime Minister has sent in the army and police. The ensuing gun battles have killed and injured scores of civilians and military personnel. In excess of 200 persons have been arrested thus far.
The security forces have been fighting people who want to prevent the extradition to the United States of Christopher “Dudus” Coke, who was charged last year in U.S. federal court with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and cocaine and with conspiracy to traffic in firearms.
The security forces have confiscated firearms, ammunition, binoculars, army fatigues and ballistic vests and are conducting searches, the government said.
