GPSU President stands by statement on Whyte-Nedd’s non-appointment
“The display of banality of anyone would not distract the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) from its mission with respect to Mrs Whyte-Nedd’s appointment as Chief Education Officer,” said GPSU President, Patrick Yarde, in a rebuttal to a letter in Stabroek News dated May 12, 2010.
He said that Minister Baksh focuses on dealing with any and everything except what is pertinent to the appointment of “this professional, skilled, efficient and decent officer” who is the Acting Chief Education Officer, Genevieve Whyte-Nedd.
The GPSU President said that he stands unapologetically by what he stated at the GPSU press conference on May 7, last.
At that press conference, Mr Yarde reported that the Education Minister had contended that he could not work with the Chief Education Officer.
Yarde opined that it is reckless, shameful, irresponsible and an embarrassment to have the chief professional person in such an important sector in Guyana, which is so crucial and vital to development, for five years in a state of limbo.
“The records would reveal that with respect to this very position when it was politically and racially correct, persons were superseded and the vacancy filled with dispatch.”
According to the Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, on numerous occasions he stated that the appointment to positions within the public service including that of the Chief Education Officer is not within the authority of the Minister of Education.
