Dear Editor,
The move by the Minister of Health to put hotlines in place so that the public can call in and air their grievances is a very good one but one hopes that when complaints are inevitably received that these will be addressed professionally and speedily.
This is a very good initiative, but I am certain that in many instances before, complaints were received from the public that have not been properly addressed, if at all, by the Chief Executive Officer at the GPHC or the Health Minister.
The service at the public hospital is very poor and more needs to be done to train the some of the nurses and the doctors about patient care, because as it is right now, it is very deplorable. But what is particularly amazing is the attitude of these same individuals when you encounter them in a private health facility. It is very conscientious and respectful.
Of course I am sure the private facilities pay a lot more than the government controlled GPHC but that is still no excuse for the poor excuse for manners that the public is confronted with on a day to day basis from these individuals.
Meanwhile the crisis line that the Minister has proposed is a very good initiative as more needs to be done to help our young people who are the ones killing themselves because they feel more often than not that their problems are insurmountable and death is the only way.
Counselors are also needed at health centres around the country so that help is easily accessible. As for domestic violence that is growing problem in this country, and I think the Minister needs to come up with something a lot more creative and proactive than a hotline to address this very pressing issue in the Guyanese society.
