The annual Mayor’s Cup football competition, initially scheduled to get underway on Wednesday March 31 has been pushed back to Sunday April 4 and organizer Lennox Author is confident that the tournament will produce the fireworks football fans have come to expect.
In first round action, Riddim Squad opposes Grove Hi Tech from 18:30 while Conquerors and New Amsterdam United oppose each other in the feature attraction. On Wednesday April 7, Camptown will face Bakewell Buxton from 16:30hrs followed by Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United against Victoria Kings. The action continues on Thursday April 8 when powerhouse GDF tackle BV Triumph while Pele take on Seawall FC. On Saturday April 10, Santos will duke it out with and Uitvlugt, while Western Tiger play Dem Amstel in the final game of the first round.
Organizer Lennox Arthur said that while the response from the corporate community has once again been favourable, there is still a need for much more assistance to make the tournament a reality. He is appealing to the business community for adequate help in promoting the competition.
The former national coach is confident that the tournament would provide the level of excitement that fans have come to expect. He also said that the fierce rivalry between the city teams and those in the urban community would add extra spice to the competition. The tournament is played in honour of Mayor Hamilton Green.
