On Sunday last, the Port Mourant Jaguars carted off the Rollers Volleyball Club of New Amsterdam handicap competition. The event was part of efforts to resuscitate competitive volleyball in Berbice.
A total of ten (10 ) teams participated; namely N/A Warriors, Overwinning /Gay Park, Guysuco – Port Mourant Training Centre 1, 2, 3, & 4, Eaglets of Canje, Berbice High School Raiders, Falcon and Port Mourant Jaguars.
In the final, Port Mourant Jaguars defeated Guysuco-Port Mourant Training Centre 1 in a best of 3 contest 9-15, 15-11 and 15-12 due to fantastic spiking displayed by Julius Seenarine who was adjudged Best Spiker and Most Valuable Player.
In the 3rd place playoff Eaglets of Canje defeated Berbice High School Raiders 21-14. Other trophies for outstanding performance were presented to Best Setter Jason Seelochan (Port Mourant Jaguars) and Best Blocker – Quacy Matheson (Guysuco – Port Mourant Training Centre 1).
Trophies were donated by Rose Hall Town Youth & Sorts Club, B & N Sukra, Berbice Regional Health Authority, Rameon Shoe World and members of the club.
The club has been in existence since 1976 and plans to hold another competition in August of this year as part of its 34th Anniversary Week of Activities.
