Police requesting “something” for prisoner’s release
Relatives of David Britton feel that his basic rights are being violated by some members of the Guyana Police Force since he has been in their custody far beyond 72 hours without a charge.
One of Britton’s cousins, Paula Patterson, told this newspaper that she learnt that Britton was in police custody on Thursday last.
When she inquired she was told that Britton was detained for loitering.
He subsequently informed his relatives that upon his detention ranks at the Brickdam Police Station made him lodge his personal possession including $15,000 in cash, his cellular phone and five packets of cigarettes.
Yesterday, Patterson said that when she went to take food for her cousin a rank at the Brickdam Police Station approached her and inquired if she was getting through.
“I told him I was here concerning a prisoner and I gave him the prisoners’ name. He then told me he could help me out if I want,” Patterson said.
The woman said the rank then told her that he could release Britton if he got $5,000.
“I tell he that I ain’t get that kind of money but I could put he on to another relative who could get the money to he.”
“He then put me fuh call de other person and like she tell he that she too can’t get de money, so he just seh ‘y’all deh pon stupidness,’” Patterson related.
She added that desperate to get her cousin out she then inquired from the rank if he could give her back the money that they took away from Britton upon his arrest, she would give him $5000 from it.
“He turn and tell me that he can’t get back the money, and that another policeman done gone with de five packets of cigarette,” she added.
The woman said that after exploring all avenues with the aim of entrapping the police rank she said that she was put out of the station compound.
Up to press time yesterday Britton was still in police custody and it is not clear if any extension was sought by the police in the High Court for his continuous detention beyond 72 hours.
Britton at present stands to lose everything that he had when the police arrested him.
The relatives say that they are going to seek official help at the risk of having the police frame their cousin.
