Defending champions Alpha United and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) both recorded hard fought 1-0 wins over West Demerara’s Seawall FC and Bartica’s Liquid Gold when first round action in the Guyana Football Federation’s National Super League tournament kicked off yesterday afternoon at the GCC ground Bourda.
Alpha, were dominant for the most part, creating quite a number of chances but the rock solid defence work of Seawall kept the Hammer at bay. It took a Dwight Peters 60th minute goal to hand Alpha full points.
The GDF like Alpha are preparing for competition in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship and looked ring rusty in their first competitive game since the Kashif and Shanghai. They found it difficult to put away 10-man Liquid Gold in sweltering conditions.
The Army side were able to seal full points compliments of a 75th minute goal by 2nd half substitute Stellon David who collected the ball in the six yard box, bobbed and weaved from the centre to the right side before slipping the ball past three defenders and the goalie.
Alpha though, were more commanding in their display against a stubborn Seawall unit that is certainly going to get better as the league progresses.
The defending champions dominated possession and created numerous chances but all went wide of the mark in the opening half. Their keeper, Marvin Griffith had an outstanding game, he brought some well calculated saves during the course of the half and game.
His game showmanship and clean slate was tainted in the 60th minute when the ever hunting Dwight Peters evaded the Sewall defence to punch the ball past Griffith. For a moment a number of fans felt that the flood gates would have been opened but Seawall kept focused at the back and on many occasions when Alpha’s forwards entered the attacking third they were confronted by a sea of defence players.
Seawall missed a golden opportunity with about 5 minutes to go to knot the scores. Alpha utilised two of their three changes with Elton Brown making way for Philbert Moffatt in the 76th minute, while Shawn Bishop was replaced by Alpha Sylvester with 10 minutes to game time.
Seawall’s Nigel Garraway was replaced by Kem Agard in the 45th and in the 65th minute Ruel Delon and Steve Felix were replaced by Ian Preston and Algrow Scott respectively.
Despite Liquid gold being reduced to 10 players in the 35th minute when Dwayne Blake received a second yellow card, GDF found it quite difficult to impose their will on the Bartica side which had made their first substitution in the 25th minute, Leon Canterbury making way for Ceon Ferreira. Hamley Martindale came in for Vernon John in the 30th minute and by the 47th minute, Liquid Gold made their third change when Kenrick Wilkinson was replaced by Whitney Welcome.
The Army persevered with the starting X1 until the 55th minute when fresh legs were introduced. They made all three changes at the same time, Marlon Benjamin, Telson McKinnon and Eusi Phillips replaced by Desford Williams, Stellon David and Shavane Seaforth.
The introduction of this trio added some flair and energy to the GDF attack, David breaking the deadlock in the 75th minute.
Alpha and the GDF now sit at the top of the table and could have been joined by either of the teams who were down to battle at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last evening. Buxton opposed Milerock while Bakewell Topp XX and Victoria Kings matched skills.
This evening at the GFC ground, Sunburst Camptown and Rosignol United will go head to head from 18:00hrs.
