Guyanese distance duo, Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson will compete in CLICO’s Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon today with the hope of registering notable performances in the usually well-attended event.
The race starts at Mid-Centre Mall, Chaguanas at 5:30am and is expected to feature most of the leading distance athletes, both inside and outside the region. The local pair wants a different result from the premier event this year.
“We think we are ready for the race. We had some preparatory 5k races leading up and it looks like we will do well,” D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport last evening, also speaking on behalf of Johnson, his training partner in Trinidad.
D’Andrade has a personal best marathon time of 2h 35:00.0 that was done at the Trinidad Marathon in 2008 and repeated in 2009. The Trinidad 26 miles and 385 yards race will be his fourth on the island this decade after his debut in 2000.
His best place was seventh last year. Johnson is not as experienced in the marathon as his counterpart, but the two are expected to team-up to overhaul the other runners. It will not be an easy task, but they believe that they will impact.
“We kind of had a systematic approach because we tried to prevent against dehydration at the other races that we use as practice. We will do our best,” D’Andrade continued before ending our conversation to get an early night’s rest.
The CLICO Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon began in 1983 and has become one of the most anticipated annual sporting events in the Caribbean. It usually attracts an invasion of athletes from Africa, Europe, North and South America.
The race carries with it a purse of over TT$200,000 in prizes with the victorious male and female receiving TT$25,200 each. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has officially certified the marathon course.
D’Andrade and Johnson will use the race to also qualify for the Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, India from October 3-14. The qualification time is set as 2h 22:14.00, 14 minutes below D’Andrade’s best.
