Unveils first division 40 overs KO competition
The development of cricket in the Ancient County took another giant step forward on Thursday last when the Berbice Cricket Board officially joined hands with Region Six Contractor Annirud Ramcharitar of Friendship Village to unveil their 40 overs First Division Knockout tournament.
The Tournament (BCB/Ramcharitar Construction Firm) will feature Berbice’s 13 first division teams and is scheduled to bowl off early in February. PRO Hilbert Foster who arranged the sponsorship hailed the launching of the tournament as another red letter day in the development of Berbice cricket.
He noted that players at all levels in 2010 would be involved in cricket as never before since the Board intends to dominate all the Inter County tournaments. Foster singled out the contribution of Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha whom he said played a major role in securing the sponsorship while noting that the relationship between the Board and the Regional Administration was one of cooperation and respect for each other in the development of Berbice.
President Keith Foster praised Ramcharitar for coming on board in difficult economic times and pledged that the tournament would be well organised; all funds will be accounted for and that the standard of play would be high.
Foster reminded the teams that indiscipline would not be tolerated in 2010 and no player who is indiscipline would gain selection to any Berbice team. Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha congratulated the BCB on the launching of another tournament, while mentioning the investment his government has made in sports and the importance of sports in a Community which helps to keep youths away from drugs and crime.
Mustapha praised Ramcharitar for his investment in the development of youths in Berbice and pledged his administration’s full support to the Berbice Board and all sporting associations which are prepared to work hard.
Sponsor, Annirud Ramcharitar in a brief statement said that his Construction Firm was pleased to be associated with the BCB and expressed his confidence in the ability of the entity to host a successful tournament.
The total sponsorship package is $220, 000. The winner would receive $50, 000 and the losing finalist, $25, 000.
