Boxers of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym in Albouys Street, Albouystown has benefited from the chivalry of Vice President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Maurice Rajkumar when several members of the executive body of the GABA visited the gym yesterday morning.
Mr. Rajkumar has donated the required sum towards the renovation of the ablution area inclusive of the toilet and bath, washbasins and shower among others.

Mr. Rajkumar (2nd left) poses with Ninvalle (3rd left) and Benjamin (extreme left) shortly after the handing over ceremony. The two contractors, Sahib and Jadanauth sit at Ninvalle’s left while the boxers of the gym are in the ring with Walcott.
The vice president has also donated the cash required to install an adequate electricity supply to the facility.
Other renovation works include those to the boxing ring, the installation of a water cooler as well as resurfacing the concrete floor in the general exercise area.
Already, two of the contractors, plumber Abraham Sahib and electrician, Suresh Jadanauth have surveyed the premises and will commence works this morning.
More than a dozen boxers that operate out of the facility were present at the function. Mr. Rajkumar informed them that his gesture emanated from deep concern for their welfare.
He also professed to have deep love for the sport citing his involvement since in the heydays of former world raters, Patrick Forde and Lennox Blackmoore.
Mr. Rajkumar also assured the lads that his gesture generated from his love for the sport and a desire to see them advance their careers.
He said that all he wanted in return for his chivalry was commitment and dedication on their part. “It would please me immensely to see one of you attend the Olympics Games and return with a gold medal,” said Rajkumar.
Coach of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, James Walcott relayed his heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Rajkumar while promising to take special care of the facility. He also pledged to work diligently with his charges to foster the kind of development that would enhance their chances at procuring that coveted Olympic gold medal.
The Harpy Eagles came into existence in 1995, under the stewardship of Walcott. Back then, only about five boxers trained at the facility. Walcott intimated that even if more were interested, there was not enough room to accommodate them since the area measured less than the size of a small bedroom.
He said that the gym subsequently moved to the more open Punt Trench Dam but the area was not conducive to his training programme so he returned to the present location.
He further said that he solicited help from a few corporate friends and managed to bring the facility to some semblance of acceptability but there was still a need for basic amenities. He was, therefore, ecstatic when Mr. Rajkumar extended a corporate hand to the gym.
Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym has produced quite a few boxing champions since coming into existence and currently tutors champions the likes of middleweight champion, Dennis Craig, light/heavyweight, Romeo Norville and featherweight, Stephon Greaves among others.
President of the GABA, Steve Ninvalle and Public Relations Officer, Michael Benjamin were on hand to witness the ceremony.
