Designer Derek Moore plans to “pull out all the stops”

“I’ve given my best in years gone by to creating quality costumes and floats for our Mashramani road parade, but this year I will make it extra special,” says veteran designer Derek Moore.
He said that even as the Secretariat is fine-tuning the national Mashramani calendar of events, he is wasting no time, and will be setting up his Mash camp shortly to produce costumes and floats for at least two Ministries.

“We are currently in meetings regarding a budget, but I’m certain of what I’ll be producing. To me there will most likely be a medium and a large band this year,” Moore said.
Moore assured that this year, “I’m pulling out all the stops because we are celebrating our 40th Republic anniversary. It is going to be explosive”.
He promises that his creations will feature “really nice colour schemes with much creativity and I will be using simple but unique materials that can mostly be found right here in Guyana.”
Fresh back from the USA where he showcased his creativity in Runway designs at a Glance, an annual show hosted in the Brooklyn, Moore said that despite his busy schedule he remains open to designing other Mash bands in addition to those he already has.
He winged out to Trinidad yesterday to create the ambience for a Guyana Nite shop at the University of the West Indies as part of the offerings for the University’s Carnival.
Moore copped the title ‘Designer of the Year” from 2003-6 and has won many trophies for his creativity during the nation’s Republic celebrations over the years.
Last year, he designed costumes and floats for two ministries and won the first and second place trophies in two categories.
“I’m still open to other companies and I’m also open to offering ideas to budding designers”.
