Jamal Hinckson hit an undefeated 40 from 47 balls to guide DCC to an exciting last over victory against New Line Cavaliers in a feature 20/20 cricket match at the DCC ground yesterday despite an entertaining 54 from left-hander Gajanand Singh.
Singh hit 5 sixes and 2 fours from, 38 balls in his attractive half-century but got little support from the other batsmen as the West Demerara side were restricted to 134-7 off 20 overs as off-spinner Kevin George (3-29) and pacer Trevon Garraway (2-22) bowled well for the Queenstown unit.
First-Class players Derwin Christian (31) and Chris Barnwell (27) wasted good starts with injudicious shots before Hinckson, who struck 2 sixes and a four in his unbeaten knock saw DCC to 135-5 in fading light with 2 balls to spare as former National 20/20 player Orin Forde took 2-14 from 2.4 overs.
Played in brilliant sunshine before a fair size crowd, the first competitive match in Demerara for 2010 provided plenty of excitement and a drooped catch by Singh at square-leg off Forde gave Denver Greaves (9*) a scrambled single and DCC a 5 wicket win.
Trevon Garraway, considered by many as Guyana’s best fast bowler despite his continued omission from the National team, removed both of the Cavalier’s openers to leave them in early trouble on 37-2 after the visitors had elected to bat first on the small ground.
Garraway, a senior Essequibo Inter county player, bowled Chabiraj Ramcharran (2) at 14-1 and had the pugnacious Andrew Lyght Junior caught at extra cover for a cameo 18 with 2 sixes and a four.
Forde (2) was then bowled by left-arm spinner Leroy Bristol at 49-3 before the Berbician Singh, who scored 644 First Division runs for the Cavaliers last year, was joined by Chein Gittens (15) to take the score to 101 before Singh, who hit left arm spinner Leroy Bristol for consecutive sixes, was stumped by Christian off George.
George, who opened the bowling and conceded 13 in his 1st over, then trapped Gittens leg before at 113-5 while ex-Guyana 20/20 Keeper Tyrell Tull (2) was run out without addition to the score as the Cavaliers lost their way.
George, who bowled with good control in his 2nd spell on a slow track, bowled Coen Esmond for 2 at 118-7 before Avinash Sookdeo (10*) and former Tests leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo (8*), who was drooped off George’s last ball of his impressive spell, added 16 for the 8th wicket.
DCC began badly when Leroy Smith was leg before to off-spinner Balram Samaroo for a duck at 4-1. Barnwell, eying a National First-Class re-call after a disappointing Regional One-Day competition, took 19 off the 4th over of the innings bowled by Samaroo and a straight six which crashed into the net protecting Roger Harper’s house from damage, brought the crowd to life.
Gittens bowled a tidy opening spell and had Barnwell in the 5th over when he top-edged a pull ‘miles’ into the air for Tull, who enjoyed a good day behind the stumps, to hold a well judged catch and leave the score on 34-2. Barnwell’s 27 was decorated with 4 fours and 1 six from 17 balls.
Christian, who Captained DCC yesterday, dumped Samaroo for six and then hit Anthony Ifill out of the ground before throwing his wicket away when he pulled a full toss from Forde to deep square-leg at 96-3.
Christian hit 3 sixes from 27 balls before Forde broke the 62-run stand between Christian and Hinckson with his first ball in the match.
Royston Alkins (5) never suggested permanence and lobbed a caught and bowled chance to Nagamootoo at 104-5 while Squires (6) was comprehensively bowled by Forde at 111-5.
Keeper Denver Greaves (9*) and Hinckson capitalised on some lose work in the field from the Cavaliers fielders in the closing stages of the match to win with 2 balls to spare.
The West Bank Demerara side was still ahead in the contest when Singh was asked to bowl the 18th over and Hinckson took 13 from it to reduce the asking rate to 8 from 2 overs.
Nagamootoo (1-19 from 4) and Gittens (1-13) bowed well in a losing cause for the visitors.
Meanwhile, New Line Cavaliers will clash with the winner of today’s Barakat Brothers competition final at Uitvlugt. Meten-Meer-Zorg ‘A’ challenge Satro SC in today’s final at the same venue form 9:30am.
