Twenty-four-year-old Police Corporal 19751 Trevor Benn was adjudged the Force’s most outstanding awardee when the Sports Secretariat of the Guyana Police Force held its Awards Presentation Ceremony yesterday at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary.
Benn, a senior Essequibo fast bowler who works in the Immigration department of the GPF, received a trophy for being identified as the Most Valuable Player in the field of cricket.
Awards were presented to police sportsmen and women as well as ranks at the managerial level.
Benn has been representing the Police Force in cricket at the first Division level since 2005 and was called to the national 21-man training cricket camp last month before becoming the first policeman in the past fifteen years to be selected to represent the country in First-Class cricket. Constable Mark Burnett, also a fast bowler, was the last Policeman to represent Guyana at the First-Class level when he played his solitary match at that level against the Leeward Islands at Bourda in 1994.
During the awards ceremony Commissioner Henry Greene promoted Corporal 17150 Amanda Hermonstine on-the-spot to the rank of Sergeant in recognition of her outstanding contribution over the years to the development of sports in the Force, especially in the volleyball discipline.
He also appointed Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis as the Chairman of the Force Athletics Section, Superintendent Nigel Hoppie as Chairman of the Cricket Section and Superintendent Deryck Josiah in charge of the Football Section.
Other ranks who received awards at the presentation ceremony for their contribution to sports were Assistant Commissioner Gavin Primo, Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis, Best Coach Sergeant 13768 Lyndon Wilson, Most Valuable Player in Domino Sergeant 17150 Amanda Hermonstine, Most Valuable Player in Table Tennis Corporal 16928 Andrew Daly, Best Organised Team Captain (cricket) Constable 19891 Rawle Brown, and Most Improved Athlete Constable 20726 Winston George.
