Washington, Goliah, Ali are Masters’ TT Champs

Marlon Washington, Xen Goliah and Ashraf Ali are Masters’ Table Tennis (TT) Champs after winning their respective categories Sunday in the Andrew DeAbreu-sponsored year end tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Club. Washington defeated Morton Blake 9-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9 and 11-9 to capture the Over-40 title after Blake had won the first two sets. Washington came storming back in the last three sets to winning the title in a gutsy effort.
Washington had swept pass Renny Taitt 3-0 in the semi-final to advance while Blake had a difficult five set game that he eventually won 3-2 to reach Washington for the ultimate showdown in the youngest category of the event. Taitt defeated Goliah 3-2 for third place in the group.
Xen Goliah then represented in the Over-50 men when he carted off that title with a three set victory against Blake, who is the father of former national junior champion Jody-Ann Blake and who had reached his second final of the day.
Goliah won 13-11, 11-6 and 11-8 in the title game after Michael Vieira pushed him to the four set thriller in the semi-final. Blake, who was probably a victim of fatigue, was forced to play five sets in his semi against Bruce Murray.
Vieira defeated Murray 3-0 to snatch the third place prize.
Ali surprised an experienced field in the Over-60 Round Robin Playoff when he ended in a tied position with Vieira. He recorded two wins and loss like Vieira, but defeated Vieira 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 9-11 and 11-0 in their match-up.
The duo had other wins against Joe Clarke and Bal Kissoon in the playoff to take the two top positions.
The Guyana Table Tennis Association will host an Open tournament scheduled for December 27 at a venue to be announced later.
