Dear Editor,
The rains are here! And hopefully my prediction of a flood, as a result of clogged drains will be wrong.
I was passing through the city (Saturday 05-12-09) window shopping, and could not have helped but noticed the huge accumulation of garbage in and around the city. As a Guyanese I was disappointed in the people since we should know better and take pride in our land.
It disgusts me to pass the sea wall particularly around the Sheriff Street area on Monday mornings, the garbage accumulation is unbecoming. And, now that it is the Christmas season, I shudder to think about the influx of garbage Guyana may experience. I try everyday to understand the mentality of people who often chose to throw a food box or a plastic bottle out the window instead of into the bin.
For those that do not know, garbage clogs drains, when drains are clogged, a flood may occur depending on the weather, and the sea level. The open dumping of garbage by Guyanese is degrading their own environment, as a result of their own actions. I think it is time, that Guyanese own up to their mistakes and as the saying goes, “as you make your bed, so you must lie on it.”
It seems that if we continue at this rate then the schools and university should introduce Waste Management 101 in their curriculum.
When the flood comes, no complaints should be made, since we make no attempt to correct our lawless actions. Elizabeth Daly
