Horse race lovers are in for a special holiday treat when the Kharag family of Queens New York, in association with the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) presents an exciting horse race meet, scheduled for Boxing Day, December 26 next.
Several of the country’s top horses will be on show in the event organized in memory of Deo Kharag, a former President of the KMTC, now residing in the USA.
Several events are slated for the day with the feature event occurring in the C and Lower Class over a distance of one mile.
The winning jockey in this race will cart off a whooping one million dollars prize while the second place finisher wins half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive $250.000 and $125.000, respectively.
The F and Lower class as well as the 2 years old open, over a distance of 6 Furlongs, are also expected to provide unbridled entertainment. These two races would attract animals that are local, as well as Caribbean bred and this should add to the excitement. Jockeys competing in both races are guaranteed a first prize of $200.000 and a second prize of $100.000.
Those jockeys coming in third and fourth in both events take home $50.000 and $25.000, respectively. the other races are: K & L (Division 2 & 3 over 6 furlongs, 13 and Lower over 6 furlongs, the 3 years old open and the H and Lower Class, both over one mile.
Turfites could look forward to improved action especially since jockeys would be competing under improved track conditions.
Another plus is that a stable of well-bred animals will be on show including Annie’s Playmate, Sweet Sudden Charm and Jade (American bred) while locally bred horses include Sequin, World Class, Little Panie, Alphabet, Jumbo Joy, Laura Lee in Flight, Sir Balagie, Pinch de Cash, Sharkira and Jumbo Joy.
With such a lucrative lineup, organizers are encouraging horse race lovers to come early and be a part of the action.
Meanwhile, organizers revealed that the event is being conducted under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and that all of the rules would be employed.
The registration period end on Saturday December 19 (today) and horse owners can register their animals with Dr Dwight Waldron (645-2848), Justice Cecil Kennard (226-1399, 225-4818, or 623-7609) or Roopnarine Matadial aka Shine (325-3192).
Horse owners are also asked to have their animals examined by the vet by 11:00hrs on race day.
