The Ministry of Public Works and Communication has signed a $15M contract with a company to install a traffic light system at the entrance of Diamond Housing Scheme on the east bank of Demerara.
According to a document emanating from the Office of the President, the installation is being done to ease congestion at the Grove/Diamond junction.
The document, dated November 3, stated that construction to facilitate the installation will take three months. It added that Nigel Erskine, Traffic Safety Engineer from the Ministry, has said that the traffic lights will be strategically placed to monitor the flow of traffic entering and exiting the scheme.
According to the document, Erskine also stated that other infrastructural works will be needed to accommodate easy movement of pedestrians at the junction.
These will involve the construction of four-foot bridges that will be placed along the existing concrete bridges. Sidewalks will be constructed to link the two bridges. A portion of the road will have to be widened to accommodate an extra lane of traffic.
