Former President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Colwyn King, was granted $350,000 bail by Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He had been refused bail on his two previous court appearances.
His lawyer yesterday was Mark Waldron.
After granting bail, the magistrate urged King to attend court for his preliminary inquiry. The magistrate also said that the PI would be done in a speedy manner.
King’s lawyer asked the court if the prosecution could complete investigations, something that prompted Magistrate Azeez to urge the prosecution to complete their file before the next court date.
He also said that the Preliminary Inquiry would be done in open court before adjourning the matter to December 7.
Meanwhile, vice President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Genevieve Allen, has been appointed Acting President of the organisation following King’s resignation. King was remanded on a charge of having sex with a minor.
General Secretary of the Union, Coretta McDonald, stated that the GTU Constitution provides for the nomination of advice president to replace the present in the event of some emergency.
At the General Council level, she stated the letter of resignation will be taken notice of.
Mc Donald had told this newspaper that King was an individual and the GTU was an organisation with a mandate to protect and serve teachers. She said that with or without King’s presence the organisation has to move forward.
The former GTU president was remanded last week by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, after he was charged for the indictable offence of carnal knowledge on the recommendation of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The GTU president was arrested on October 14 and was released on $100,000 bail after a teenaged girl leveled charges of being sexually involved with him at a Princess Street hotel.
