Man further remanded, as police await DPP’s advice

An unrepresented Sherwin Lewis was further remanded to prison on Friday when he appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
According to Police Prosecutor, Sherwin Matthews, the way forward for the case is dependent on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutor (DPP) which should be forthcoming shortly.

The 28-year-old Lewis is accused of unlawfully removing a four-year-old girl, Varsha Singh, from her parents’ home between Sunday August 9 and Monday August 10 with the intent of depriving her parents, Parbattie Motieram and Surujpaul Singh, possession of their child.
After disappearing from her parents’ home, the missing child was rescued by a number of concerned residents who discovered that she was being held by the accused in a makeshift structure in an overgrowth section in Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.
Lewis, according to reports, was able to elude the angry residents but was later apprehended by officers of the Leonora Police Station.
Yesterday was Lewis’ fourth appearance before the Magistrate, however, no additional charges were brought against him.
At a previous hearing on September 28 last, it was highlighted that the advice of the DPP was needed for the continuance of the case.
And this state of affairs Matthews had attributed to the fact that “we are still getting some problems with the virtual complainant (four-year-old) because of her age. She doesn’t want to speak much but we are working on it,” Lewis assured.
In emphasising the urgency of the DPP’s advice, the Magistrate had underscored that other evidence surrounding the case could also be used aside from the child.
“The child is just four years old; she was taken from her parents, they would have made a report to the police. The child was even rescued by neighbours who saw him (Lewis) with the child. In other words all of that make up evidence,” the Magistrate asserted.
Lewis is slated to make another appearance on November 16 at the same court.
