Six-year-old J’anay Nedd fell into a man hole last Friday night and was forced to tread in the filthy murky sewage water for some five minutes.
The young girl and other family members were out enjoying the Diwali Motorcade close by the Celina Resort at the head of Vlissengen Road, when they decided to return to their vehicle that was parked a short distance away.
Nedd and her six-year-old cousin, Kayla, were running toward the vehicle, when Nedd fell into the unseen and uncovered three-foot wide manhole.
The girl told Kaieteur News reporters that she was briefly submerged in the water, but did not sink to the bottom of the hole.
After seeing her daughter disappear in a flash, Susan Williams ran toward the vanishing point and found the manhole.
She screamed for her daughter, but got no response.
A passerby, after noticing Williams’ frantic calls for her daughter, stripped his shirt off and plunged into the dark hole.
He subsequently pushed Nedd out of the hole, and was then hauled out himself by other public-spirited citizens.
Nedd told her mother that she did not respond to her calls because she didn’t want to swallow any of the water.
With haste, Williams took her daughter to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, and had no chance to truly thank the stranger who ultimately rescued her six-year-old.
The man was described as young and of East Indian ancestry.
Kaieteur News understands that some time ago a man was stung multiple times by bees in the same area and thereafter succumbed from the multiple stings. It was later found that the hive was built in the very same man-hole, when it was covered.
Further reports state that the manhole is some eight feet deep and was uncovered to have the hive removed. It has remained uncovered for at least eight to ten months.
The man-hole has now been covered with rotting planks of wood, by workers operating on the sea wall pumps.
