Dear Editor,
Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) and its subsidiary, TCL Guyana Incorporated (TGI) have applied to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) requesting that the court hold the Guyana Government in contempt for failing to implement the Common External Tariff (CET) on cement from non-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) sources as ordered by the court.
What must be noted is that participating countries in CARICOM were not willing to allow private companies to approach the CCJ on these issues. All were against it.
But one private company has been allowed to do this and that company is TCL.
It is strange that TCL is also the controlling interest in the CCJ Trust Fund and a major stakeholder in TCL is also the representative of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce on the CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) – the body that rules on intra-regional trade matters.
Is this just coincidence? How can Guyanese expect a fair hearing from the CCJ in this unholy alliance? Cedric Lord
