The Private Sector Commission of Guyana (PSC) took the time yesterday to recognise the newly appointed Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Francois Montour, by presenting a plaque of appreciation in his honour.
In a simple ceremony held at Duke Lodge, Kingston, Chairman of the PSC, Captain Gerry Gouveia, lauded the relationship between the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the PSC.
He explained that a lot of capacity and institutional building mechanism are needed in Guyana.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Vice Chairman of the PSC, Ramesh Dookhoo, who noted that over the years, CIDA has shared a good relationship with the PSC.
“We have been able to contribute to the national good by developing standards,” Dookhoo said.
CIDA has supported the PSC Capacity Development Project in keeping with its policy to foster economic growth and poverty reduction in Guyana and the wider Caribbean region, Dookhoo said.
The main objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the PSC to undertake sound economic analysis and utilize it to contribute to Government’s decision-making on key economic issues that impact on private sector development.
It also envisages promoting greater understanding among Guyanese firms, of emerging trade and investment issues so that they can be better positioned in an increasingly competitive global economic environment.
The project supports an Economic Policy Unit within the PSC to achieve these objectives.
It was initiated in 2001 and will run until 2011, at a cost of Cdn$476,000.
The High Commissioner noted that the PSC is important in any country and pledged his government’s continued support to the commission.
