Nagamootoo among the wickets
By Sean Devers
Former West Indies Test opener Ryan Ramdass scored his second century in the National Neal & Massy 40-overs 1st division cricket competition, while former West Indies Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan and ex-West Indies under-19 left-hander Gajanand Singh registered half-centuries in action as the Demerara zone of the competition continued yesterday.
The 26-year-old Ramdass, hit 7 fours and 3 sixes in an unbeaten 107 and added 123 for the 2nd wicket with ex-West Indies under-19 player Rajendra Chandrika (43*) as Everest beat Mavericks by 9 wickets at Everest.
Imtiaz Hack (42) led the fight for the West Demerara side who fell for 159 in 39 overs, as Troy Gonsalves (3-33), Javeed Rasheed (3-27) and Abilash Dookie (2-31) did the damage with the ball for the hosts who reached 161-1 in 35 overs after losing Chris Patandin for 14 at 38-1.
At Bourda, Sarwan, batting for the first time in local division one cricket since scoring a century against Transport Sports Club (TSC) in the 2007 Neal & Massy competition, stroked an elegant 52 and put together 90 for the 3rd wicket with West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson who scored 34 in a losing effort for GCC who lost to GNIC by 3 runs.
Treon Forde hit an unbeaten 47 towards the end but once First-Class player Vishal Singh was run out for 13 and Sarwan was LBW to Alphonso, GNIC, led by good bowling from Ronale Bourne (2-38) and Ken Alphonso (2-42) restricted GCC to 206-9 off 40 overs after GNIC had made 209-9 with Dexter Solomon making 37 not out and Shawn DeSouza hitting 32. Sarwan took 3-37 and Johnson 2-50.
At Enmore, the Berbcie combination of Gajanand Singh, who is now playing for Demerara, former Test leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and ex-West Indies under-19 Captain Andre Percival powered New Line Cavaliers to a 15 run win against Lusignan.
Singh scored an attractive 73 and got support from Percival as Cavaliers made 179 in 39 overs.
Left-arm spinner Narvin Singh (4-11), Rajendra Naikbarran (3-46) and Hardeo Sattaur (3-31) were the main wicket takers for Lusignan who fell for 164 despite 55 from Surajpaul Deosarran and 33 from national under-15 left-hander Brian Sattaur.
Nagamootoo grabbed 3-17 and former Berbice 20/20 player Balram Samaroo 2-30 for the West Demerara line-up.
At Malteenoes, Guyana player Deon Ferrier fell one short of a century after hitting 10 fours and 3 sixes and got support from ex-West Indies under-19 Skipper Steven Jacobs (48) and national opener Shemroy Barrington (29) as Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) made 271-8 against the University of Guyana (UG). UG fell for 156 in reply despite 55 from Jermaine Reynolds.
Former national 20/20 player Orin Forde had 4-33 and Guyana under-19 pacer Seon Daniels 3-30 as MSC continued their unbeaten run with a 115-run win.
In the other match played, TSC beat GDF by 1 wicket with 2 balls to spare at DCC after reaching 182-9 replying to the 180-6 in 40 overs made by the soldiers.
Jeremiah Harris hit an unbeaten 56 for his new team GDF before taking 2-38 in a losing cause. Steven Alves (45) and Quincy Proctor (41) spurred TSC to victory as Travis Gilbert followed up his 20 with the bat by taking 3-25.
