Fans were treated to a nail biting experience at the Karma Bowling Alley Sunday last as four of Guyana’s top ten-pin bowlers competed for the Superhuman Bowler in a Winner-Take-All-entrance-fees bowling competition hosted by Archbishop London. In addition, Archbishop London agreed match the total entrance fee resulting in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners receiving 50, 30 and 20 percent of the amount respectively.
The competition began on August 30, with thirteen competitors (including one female), in three groups, bowling six games each in two game round-robin format.
The bowlers with the four highest aggregates from the initial six games were selected to enter the finals.
The first stage saw some major upsets as previous champions along with some normally high scoring bowlers did not qualify for the ‘final four’.
The top four emerging from the qualifying round along with their scores were as follows:
Navin Bisram (1171), Archbishop Philbert London (1088), Sando Dazzell (1067) and Joseph Messiah (1064).
The finals entailed each bowler bowling three rounds totaling six games, in a two game round-robin against each other. The highest aggregate from the six games was adjudged the Superman.
This produced exciting play at the end of each round. The 55-year-old Archbishop took an early lead in the first round with 379 points followed by Joseph Messiah with 334, Sando Dazzell 309 and Navin Bisram 306.
During the second round, Bisram bowled excellently, scoring 225 points in one game, taking the lead at the end of this round with a total of 719 points. London followed closely on 715, Messiah 689 and Sando Dazzell, 631. After 5 games the points tally was Archbishop London 892, Messiah 878, Bisram 876, and Dazzell 792.
The sixth and final game saw all eyes focused on Archbishop London and Bisram, as Messiah’s game simply collapsed while London and Bisram continued to bowl well. It was a neck and neck competition between the pair as their outstanding talent, nerve and endurance were on public display.
London and Messiah finished their game first with 1071 and 1031 points respectively. Bisram, entering his tenth frame on a spare and with a cumulative total of 1049 needed only 23 points to be the winner. He came close but did not succeed as he only managed to end to 1066 points, Archbishop London emerging as the Superman Bowler with his 1071, beating the closest competitor by 5 points. Ten-Pin bowling was introduced to Guyana over two years ago at the Karma Bowling Alley and has since fascinated the interest of many across Guyana.
According to the organisers, Bowling is a very simple sport to learn and requires as much discipline and focus as any other sport.
At present Guyana’s top Ten-Pin players should be a force to reckon with across the Caribbean and the local players are looking at the possibility of engaging teams from Suriname and Brazil at a competitive level.
