Dear Editor,
I am a very old and sickly citizen who resides in Grove, East Bank Demerara. Our village was once a very peaceful neighbourhood, which I useed to enjoy and that’s how it is supposed to be. However, last year my neighbour opened a Wash Bay. I still can’t understand how the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission approved to have a Wash Bay opened in a housing area. They are using a pressure hose to clean/wash vehicles which is causing tremendous noise within our neighbourhood.
These polluters commence work as early at 7 am and finish as late as 8 pm every day, even holidays! A number of complaints were sent to the Local Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Grove Police Station and the Environmental Protection Agency.
However, one year has passed and we still live in this health hazard neighbourhood and nothing is being done by these three agencies. Every time I complain, one agency says that’s it’s the other’s duty to get it resolved. I have been told this for over one year now. A number of officers visited this location, but during the visits, operation was not on-going and when the officers ask the polluter to put on the pressure-wash they would put in the silencer. Also, this measurement would not be useful, since they are not washing a vehicle and that adds additional noise. This was told to the officers, but they ignore us.
I even confronted the polluters and they were very abusive and threatening. Other villagers are affected as much as I am, but are very scared to say/do anything. Concern Resident
