To commemorate its 168th anniversary, the village of Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, kicked off its celebrations with a prayers session conducted by representatives of the three major religious faiths in Guyana, yesterday.
The service which was held at the Queenstown Community Centre also saw representatives from the three major political parties. The Alliance for Change, People’s National Congress Reform and the People’s Progressive Party, in attendance.
The theme of the celebrations is ‘Acknowledging the past; securing our future’.
President of the Queenstown development organisation, Wendell Walcott, engaged the audience with a brief history of the village that was bought by slaves in 1841.
Mrs. Steavon Drakes-Ellis, a member of the Queenstown/New York Association, said that the village of Queenstown ‘needs a change.’ Villagers need to work diligently together for the enhancement of a better village.
She strongly encouraged parents to respect time and work audaciously with their children to enhance their lives and the country as a whole.
Special invitee and Minister of Local Government, Kellawan Lall, who was charge with giving the feature address, firstly congratulated the association on their anniversary, while expressing honour to attend.
In his address he reiterated the earlier statements made by Mrs. Drakes. He encouraged the villagers and association to learn from their failures. Although not promising any financial association to the organisation, he said he is always willing and ready to lend his assistance.
Certificates were distributed to 24 Essequibians.
Of those who received the award for their contributions financially, were AFC councilor Francis Darchivelle, Imam Bacchus & Sons Ltd, Food for the Poor, Mr. Senath and Anita Payne.
Paulette Dainty, Ellis, Wendell Walcott, Desiree Pearson, and Curtis Austin were among those who received the award for the longest serving members to the Queenstown Association Development Group.
The week-long of activities will continue with debating and Spelling Bee competitions today.
