Intense action expected at Thirst Park
By Michael Benjamin
After a three-year hiatus, the Inter-Market football competition is set to kick off at the Banks DIH, Thirst Park ground, with the opening ceremony, followed by two matches on Monday.
The organisers are confident that the tournament, sponsored by Power Stout, would produce the usual excitement witnessed over the years. According to O’Neil Durant, one of the organisers, the tournament is among the best staged locally and pits the skills of footballers with affiliation to the various municipal markets.
Beverage giant, Banks DIH has once again demonstrated staunch faith in the organisers’ ability to put on a qualitative show and has once again acquiesced to another lucrative sponsorship package.
The winners cart off $150.000 and a trophy, while the runners-up would pocket $100.000.
The third and fourth place finishers would be awarded $75.000 and $50.000, respectively.
There would also be special prizes for the most valuable player, best goal-keeper and the most prolific goal scorer.
Communications Manager, Banks DIH, Troy Peters was present at a press conference, convened at the Banks DIH Thirst Park boardroom, to launch the tournament and brief media practitioners of issues pertaining to the smooth running of the tournament.
He endorsed his firm’s commitment to the successful staging of the tournament even as he urged fans attending the matches to exhibit exemplary conduct. “We are aware that Thirst Park is not as large as Bourda or the Tucville ground, but we wish to implore fans to demonstrate good conduct, so that the image of the sport would remain unblemished,” Peters said.
The Communications Manager juxtaposed the qualities of the Power Stout product with those to be expected from the tournament. “I wish to encourage football fans to come out in strong support of this tournament and also continue supporting Power Stout, the beverage of the Inter-Market tournament,” Peters urged.
Meanwhile, representative of the Referees’ Council, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith beseeched the players to be of their best conduct since his officials would be very stringent in applying the rules of the game.
Co-Promoter, Michael Vanderstoop, while addressing the media, urged all of the participants to be well behaved so as not to bring the game into disrepute. He pointed out that any demonstration of poor conduct could have a negative effect on future sponsorship deals. “Play hard but remember that the image of the sport must be always upheld,” Vanderstoop concluded.
Activities would commence with the opening ceremony at 15:30hrs, after which the first whistle would be blown at 16:45hrs.
In the opening encounter of the double-header, La Penitence Market match skills with Wales Market, while Kitty and Buxton clash in the feature match.
Plaisance and Parika Markets battle for honours on Wednesday, while Merriman’s Mall and Golden Grove Market oppose each other in the feature attraction. Stewartville/Lenora, East Ruimveldt, Bourda, Ann’s Grove, Vendor’s Arcade and Wismar Markets are also competing in the tournament.
