Jumbo Joy, owned by Nazrudeen Mohamed of the Jumbo Jet Stable, scored a clinical victory in the feature C class event, when the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club in collaboration with Banks DIH Limited and Rhythm Stars International Sound Company successfully staged its annual one day meet last Sunday at the Club’s Bel Air No.6 West Coast Berbice racetrack.
Directors Gansham Singh and Ian John of the NSMTC presents the Guyenterprise trophy to Rose Mohammed of the Jumbo Jet Stables.
The win by the champion sprinter crowned a memorable day for the connections of that entity, as they took away all the major events, scoring four wins and one second in five starts, including the ‘C’, Three-year and Two-year-old events in a dominant display.
The Three-year-old match up saw Sweet Carmel, Tropical Passion and Laura Lee in Flight taking an early lead, as the horses all enjoyed a clean break in the 1600m race.
The lead changed hands constantly as the tussle continued along the back stretch.
Jumbo Joy ridden by Yap Drepaul in the meantime was sitting in the pack and as the animals hit the far turn for home the experience of Drepaul came into play, as he decided to make his move.
Timing his acceleration to perfection, Drepaul ensured the animal sprinted away from its opponents to take the hefty $350,000 winner’s purse, compliments of Banks DIH Limited and the Guyenterprise trophy. Tropical Passion, in a passionate last minute burst, chased for all its worth to come in second. Judy’s Perfect in its first race ever finished third and Laura Lee in Flight fourth.
In front of a packed house and in conditions made a little heavy due to overnight and early morning rain, the day’s programme was grand, as a number of horses created major upsets.
Banks manager Mortimer Stewart presents the winning trophy in the two yr old event to Nazrudeen Mohammed Junior of the Jumbo Jet.
The Three-year-old one Mile Normal Singh Memorial Classic saw Top of The Line of the Jumbo Jet Stable creating the biggest upset for the day with a masterful performance to beat pre-race favourites Royal Champion and Coconut Boy to snatch the $200,000 prize, compliments of Dalip Trading Enterprise. With top jockey Paul Delph in the stirrups the animal took over from the half way mark and romped away to win in convincing fashion. Royal Champion came through for second ahead of Prixie Fire and Coconut boy respectively.
It was more glory for the Jumbo Jet stable in the Two-year-old 1000m sprint, with Zionata mounted by Yap Drepaul holding off all challengers to carry away the $200,000 first prize put up by NSMTC and the Banks DIH Trophy.
Miracle Silver came in second ahead of Miss Bounty and Stormy Water.
Laura Lee in Flight of the Customs racing Stable, with Daniel Floris aboard took centre stage, leading from gate to pole in the F class 1200m event. The win was worth $150,000 and the Guyana Tourism Authority Trophy, compliments of Directory Indranauth Harold Singh. Pinch D Cash finished second, as Finishing Touch and The Gap rounded out the money.
The G class 1200m gallop, which was the first event of the day, started things nicely for the connections of the Jumbo Jet stable, as Prospectors Pride with champion jockey Yap Drepaul took the owner’s trophy and the $130,000 purse from Finishing Touch, Lady of My Dreams and Matterazi.
Star Streak of the Dipnarine stable with Jockey Kumar Singh, came through to win the ‘I’ class 1200m race in a close finish from Kavinci of the Jumbo Jet stable, Miami Vice and Strike D Fire. The win was worth $110,000.
Sunday Star once again shone brilliantly as it took pole position in the Division 2 and 3 race beating Red Bull, Foolish Pleasure and Customs Warrior without a fight as it took away the $95,000 first prize over the 1200m distance.
The Jumbo jet stable took all the individual prizes available. The stable was adjudged the champion stable, while trainers Sham Chattergoon and Romel ‘Blacks’ Ramroop were the champion trainers. The Champion Owner was Nazrudeen ‘Jumbo Jet’ Mohammed, while Yap Drepaul received accolades as the Champion Jockey.
The top performers all received trophies compliments, of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall in Bourda Market.
Over 65 horses took part in the day’s proceedings, which had some $3.5M in cash and other incentives up for grabs.
The next race meet is the Annual Emancipation Meet set for Sunday August 2 at the Port Mourant Turf Club, while the Rising Sun Race club will host racing on the August 16.
