After losing their last 4 wickets yesterday for just 5 runs, Guyana with a slim 6-run first innings lead were 240 away for victory with 9 wickets in hand going into the final day of their first round TCL regional under-19 three-day cricket match against the Leeward Islands in Jamaica.
Set 240 to win after the Islanders made 247 in their second innings, Guyana 187-6 overnight, fell for 195, the South Americans were 40-1 – losing first innings centurion Trevon Griffith (29) just before the close.
Herrell Greene (6) and night watchman Totaram Bishun (5) are the not out batsmen heading into today’s final day.
Earlier, overnight batsman Jeetendra Sookdeo added 5 to his first day 45 before he was run out to spark a lower order collapse as Nelon Bolan and Quinton Boatswain grabbed 4 wickets each as the Leewards kept themselves in the contest.
Andre Fox (7) was bowled by Keon Joseph at 22-1 before Kjel Tyson who made 61 and Yanick Leonard (52) added 118 for the second wicket before both batsmen were removed by off-spinner Royston Alkins.
Jamal Hamilton (33) and Sherwin Burton (39) offered middle-order resistance before the Leewards fell in the final session leaving the game wide open.
Daniels, who shared the new ball with Joseph, collected his second 3-wicket haul of the match by taking 3-73 from 23 overs. Leg-spinner Jonathan Foo was expensive but also captured his second 3-wicket haul for the game with 3-59 from 12 overs while Alkins 2-34 from 14 tidy overs.
Guyana will be hoping to bat solidly today to give them full points and a lot will depend on the experienced Sookdeo with support from Greene, Alkins, Skipper Anthony Bramble, Foo and Seon Hetmyer to see them to victory on a last day track.
Elsewhere, Trinidad and Tobago made a mammoth 424-7 declared against host Jamaica at the Kensington Cricket Club. In reply, the Jamaicans were 148-4.
And playing at Chedwin Park, Barbados were 136-7 in their second innings against the Windward Islands who were bowled out for 157 in response to the Bajans first innings total of 218.
