Six-member Guyana Golf team for Barbados tourney

Guyana will be represented by a six-man team at this weekend’s Barbados Open Golf championships at the Royal Westmoreland Golf Club in Bridgetown.
The six golfers – Alfred Mentore, Lester Alvis, Ian Gouveia, Clifford Reis, Mike Guyadin and captain of the Lusignan Golf Club Jerome Khan left Guyana yesterday (Thursday) for the Caribbean island and will match skills against some of the best amateur golfers from Europe, North America and the Caribbean.
Mentore will compete in the championship flight, while Gouveia, Guyadin and Alvis will contest the first flight 0-14 handicap. Khan will battle in the senior flight, while Reis will seek top honours in the super senior flight.
The Westmoreland Course is the ideal hunting ground for Alvis who won the best net flight at the Sir Garfield Sobers International tournament a few months ago. Gouveia, Khan and Guyadin were also part of that tournament and know the conditions.
The tournament will run from Friday to Sunday and the local players have expressed confidence in returning to Guyana with prizes.
The championship field will include sports icons in Trinidad and Tobago’s world cricket Test batting record holder Brian Lara and Dwight Yorke, the former captain of the Twin Island Republic football team and English Premier League player.
The local players secured sponsorship from Banks DIH Ltd., Courts Guyana Inc. and LIAT Airlines.
